Docs & Install Guide
NeuralRoute is a local code index for macOS. It indexes your projects on your machine and gives your AI tools a fast search tool — so they read a few relevant snippets instead of whole files, cutting token usage dramatically.
Install
Download the .dmg & install
Download the .dmg, open it, and drag NeuralRoute.app onto the Applications folder. Then launch it from Applications.
The app is notarized by Apple, so it opens with a normal double-click — no security prompts. Use the .dmg (not the .zip) for the smoothest install.
If macOS says “damaged” (rare)
This only happens if you unzipped the .zip with a third-party tool that broke the app’s signature. Use the .dmg instead, or run this once in Terminal to clear the quarantine flag, then reopen:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/NeuralRoute.appYou only do this once.
Add a project
Click +, pick a project folder. It indexes automatically (you’ll see a progress bar) and wires itself into your AI tools.
How it works
Index — locally
A hybrid index is built on your machine: lexical (SQLite FTS5 / BM25) + semantic (local embeddings, int8 vectors). Nothing is uploaded.
Connect — any AI
One click writes the config for Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code, plus a universal AGENTS.md. Any AI with a terminal can also just run the CLI directly.
Search instead of read
When you ask “where is X handled?”, the AI calls the index and gets ranked snippets with exact path:line ranges — reading ~50 lines instead of thousands.
Measure the savings
The dashboard shows estimated tokens saved next to your real AI spend (read from Claude Code), over any date range.
Use it from any terminal
The same engine is a CLI — any agent or human can search a project directly:
# index a project
cidx index /path/to/project
# search it (ranked path:line snippets)
cidx search "where do we validate login" -p /path/to/project
# wire it into your AI tools (MCP + AGENTS.md)
cidx connect /path/to/projectLicense & feature requests
